Everything we know today about the world’s plants can be linked back to the carefully preserved specimens of herbarium collections. The Missouri Botanical Garden’s Herbarium is one of the largest collections of its kind in the world, with 8 million specimens and counting. At the Garden, scientists collect samples from across the globe, loan specimens to other researchers, and document DNA extractions to help in identifying new species. Currently, the Herbarium is embarking on a six-year transformational initiative to digitalize the Garden’s extensive collection – work that will inform and aid restoration and conservation efforts worldwide.
